DSSE | Academic Programs
The DS School of Entrepreneurship offers in-campus academic programs through elective courses and a Minor program. Several theory and lab courses relevant to innovation and entrepreneurship are offered to under-graduate as well as post-graduate (Masters and PhD) students of the Institute. Students completing 30 credits of ENT courses are eligible for a Minor in Entrepreneurship. DSSE is working towards offering online courses to develop entrepreneurial skills and mindset with students beyond the IIT Bombay campus. DSSE also offers short-term workshops for researchers, working professionals and aspiring entrepreneurs.
Courses
ENT Courses
DSSE offers 6 elective courses and 1 core course in the domains of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. These courses can be tagged as either Minor or Institute Elective. From 2022, undergraduate students pursuing B Tech or Dual Degrees need to take a core course in Innovation & Entrepreneurship. Students can start taking DSSE elective courses from second year onward; those who complete a minimum of 30 credits receive an additional degree of B.Tech (Minor) in Entrepreneurship. ENT courses are available to both UG and PG students. The foundation course ‘Introduction to Entrepreneurship’ is the most popular among students. All courses employ an interactive and collaborative pedagogy, using case discussions, field assignments and team projects. Courses offered by DSSE faculty are listed here.
Online Programs
DSSE is working towards launching online courses, certificates and degree programs for empowering entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, researchers and managers – all those who are either creating startup companies or supporting the ecosystem. We will adapt a smart pedagogy with blended and flipped model of learning. An M.Engg program in Innovation & Entrepreneurship has been approved by IIT Bombay Senate in 2021. Online learning courses for outreach through NPTEL is also on the cards with the objective of creating job-creators and not just job-seekers.
Workshops & Training Programs
DSSE conducts short-terms workshops, training programs , and executive education programs for working professionals, faculty and researchers, small and medium business owners, and aspiring entrepreneurs to update their knowledge and skillset in critical aspects of innovation and entrepreneurship.
INV.ENT Workshop
This is meant for teachers, innovation/incubation managers and administrators from academic institutes to learn about entrepreneurship courses and programs for possible implementation in their institutions. They learn the best practices of translational research, product innovation and business incubation from experienced faculty and industry leaders. Visits are arranged to different inter-disciplinary centres developing innovative products and technologies. Participants also get a first-hand exposure to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in IIT Bombay, by interacting with startup teams working on live projects. The first program was organized during 14-18 March 2017, under the aegis of TEQIP, Ministry of HRD, New Delhi. It benefitted over 50 participants, most of them teachers at technical institutes across the country. The second program was organized during 8-12 July 2019. A one-day version of the program, called INV.ENT was organized on 31 Jan 2020.
ATC Workshop
Accelerating Technology Commercialization (ATC) Program was offered to faculty members and researchers from Maharashtra funded by RGSTC (Rajiv Gandhi Science & Technology Commission, Govt of Maharashtra). These three-day workshops cover topics under innovation, commercialization and entrepreneurship and the sessions include Technology Package Development, Intellectual Property Rights, New Product Development, Finance and Commercials, Marketing and Go-to-Market Strategies for technology innovations.
PhD Program
The vision of the Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship (DSSE), IIT Bombay entails creating a world class educational infrastructure for reliable promotion of technology entrepreneurship, by creating a concomitant knowledge base on this topic driven by fundamental research in the broad domain of innovation and entrepreneurship.
DSSE invites applications for a PhD in the domain of Innovation & Entrepreneurship in the following indicative areas of research, for candidates who could subsequently spread across academia, industry and the social sector strengthening technology-based innovation and entrepreneurship infrastructure of the country:

SELECTION PROCESS
Applicants who fulfil the eligibility criteria will be invited to appear in an in-person research aptitude test on IITB campus, scheduled on Saturday, May 11th. This Research Aptitude Test would involve synthesis of research paper(s) and their critique.
Candidates shortlisted based on performance in the written research aptitude test will be interviewed with specific reference to the research proposal submitted at the time of application. Final merit list will be declared based on performance in the interview.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Candidates need to fulfil each of the following three criteria as listed in Sections A, B and C for a valid application
Section A - Qualifying Degree:
A1- Masters or equivalent degree in Engineering / Technology or Master of Management or Two Year full time MBA / PGDM from IITs/IIMs or an institute recognized by AICTE/UGC/AIU or M.Des.
A2 - Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or 4 year B.Des. or 4 Year BS Economics
A3 - Master’s or equivalent degree in science or M.Pharm. or MCA or MBBS
A4 – Masters or equivalent degree in Arts / Commerce (or allied subjects) or M.Phil. or LLM or One Year Executive MBA from IITs/IIMs or an institute recognized by AICTE/UGC/AIU or CA /CS
AND
Section B - Aptitude Scores
For qualifying degree listed under A2, A3 & A4, candidates must also fulfil ONE of the following additional requirements. Candidates of category A1 with MBA / PGDM / Masters in Management from institutes other than the institutes of national importance will also need to fulfil ONE of the following requirements:
- Should have taken GATE or CEED or CAT or GMAT or GRE or NEET or CLAT during last 5 years and scored minimum percentiles /marks as specified below:
- GATE:75 percentile overall; CAT: 75 percentile overall, GMAT:600 marks, GRE:300 marks, CLAT – 75 percentile, CEED: 75 percentile, NEET: 75 percentile
- Selected through National Eligibility Test – UGC NET including lectureship (Assistant Professorship)
- Selected through a National level examination conducted by MHRD or its agencies /Institutions such as UGC/ IIT/ IISc./ IISER/ IIIT etc.
- Selected provisionally for the DST-INSPIRE Fellowship (provisional award letter to be produced)
- Minimum of TWO years of professional experience (acquired after obtaining the qualifying degree and completed before the starting of the semester in which admission is sought)
All Bachelor’s degree undergraduate course leading to a Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s or Bachelor-Master Dual Degree in Engineering, Sciences or Architecture offered by IITs (admitted through JEE) having a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (on 10 scale) and above from an Indian Institute of Technology or any of the CFTIs is exempted from the requirement of a valid GATE score for the consideration of General Eligibility Requirement for admission.

Section C - Research Proposal
Applicants have to submit a research proposal of 1000 - 2000 words which identifies a research problem / interest from the domain of innovation and entrepreneurship, argues for its relevance by citing existing literature around it with academic references and proposes an appropriate research methodology to conduct the study.
Note 1: Requirement of minimum marks in the qualifying degrees can be accessed in Section A.5 of the IITB Information Brochure on PhD Admissions. For CA/ CS, marks obtained in the preceding degree will be considered.
Note 2: Criteria for awarding Teaching Assistantship and other application categories are as per the guidelines mentioned in section A.6 of the IITB Information Brochure on PhD Admissions.
COURSEWORK
We are committed to providing high quality training to doctoral scholars through a comprehensive coursework in the first year of the candidate’s program where (s)he will credit courses across three distinct buckets:
- Research Foundations – methodology and research philosophy courses
- Domain Introduction – fundamental concepts and theories in the domain of innovation and entrepreneurship
- Domain Specialization – advanced courses towards specific research interest of the scholar

Post-Doc Opportunities at DSSE
Information for IPDF Applicants
DSSE, IIT Bombay welcomes applications for Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowships (IPDF) from qualified candidates with a PhD degree in Innovation & Entrepreneurship or related disciplines.
Eligibility Criteria:
Fresh PhDs or PhDs with less than 2 years of experience from the date of defence or doctoral researchers who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting examination are eligible to apply. The candidates should be preferably below 32 years of age. IIT Bombay's own PhD students are not eligible for this position.
Applicants must have published a minimum of two publications in reputed journals (SCI/SCOPUS Indexed) or case study outlet (only published case studies with a teaching note will be considered). A maximum of one conference proceedings will be considered in lieu of journal of case study publication.
Merely fulfilling this criterion does not guarantee selection. The IPDF is highly competitive: there are only a limited number of IPDF positions in the School. International applicants are also encouraged to apply.
Duration and benefits
The period of the IPDF is one year. Candidates will be considered for extension for a second year based on their performance in the first year. Such candidates will submit a research plan for the second year, which will be duly evaluated and recommended by an expert committee. There will be no extension after two years.

BEFORE APPLYING
Applicants are advised to view the DSSE webpage (https://www.dsse.iitb.ac.in/) to learn about its faculty members and their fields of teaching and research. Every applicant should identify a faculty member in DSSE to act as the IPDF Supervisor, and prepare a research proposal in line with the stated research interest of the potential supervisor. The research proposal, typically 1-3 pages long, should describe the background work, objectives, methodology, etc., along with research plans for the first year.

Expectations from IPDF
An IPDF is expected to carry out new research work with the Supervisor, on a full-time basis on-campus. Publications in the form of conference proceedings and journal articles are strongly encouraged and expected. Publications resulting from the IPDF research should acknowledge IIT Bombay and DSSE for the support through the IPDF programme.
Besides their research work, IPDFs could, in consultation with their faculty mentors, help with teaching activities including lab courses, and assist DSSE students in their projects, besides administrative duties. IPDFs may find this experience of value in their future careers.
